The MGOSC Trips & Tours group took a tour of the Buena Vista Mansion in Prattville, AL, also called the Montgomery-James-Whittaker House. It was a great tour with a very interesting history of the house. The home was originally built from a mail order house. The entire "kit" was shipped from England. The pieces were numbered for construction. The home went through many owners/families over time and was added onto many times, including the large front columns. The design of the spiral staircase up to the third floor was also used in the Alabama State Capitol Building (double spiral staircase there). Andrew Jackson was inspired by this staircase when designing his for the Hermitage. The house is now used for special events and tours and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
