October 2012

We had lots of Fall and Halloween fun in October! Daniel’s school class went on a field trip to a local Pumpkin Patch and then our whole family went to Dreamfield Farms Pumpkin Patch – tons of fun! We decorated small pumpkins with markers and carved a large pumpkin closer to Halloween. I took the boys out on a nature walk to gather nuts and other items in their Halloween buckets. Daniel was really upset that I didn’t let him bring home a squirrel. :) We saw the USO Sesame Street Show on base and the kids got fun Elmo toys there. Allan and I went to the Texas A&M Auburn game and had a great (and cold) time. Finally, Halloween was great. The boys dressed up as Captain America (Daniel) and Diego (Colin). Colin had wanted to be Diego since the beginning of September. When we went to the store to buy the costume, he wanted to be Dora instead! They did great at Trick-or-Treating and got tons of candy!

Buena Vista Mansion Tour

The MGOSC Trips & Tours group took a tour of the Buena Vista Mansion in Prattville, AL, also called the Montgomery-James-Whittaker House. It was a great tour with a very interesting history of the house. The home was originally built from a mail order house. The entire "kit" was shipped from England. The pieces were numbered for construction. The home went through many owners/families over time and was added onto many times, including the large front columns. The design of the spiral staircase up to the third floor was also used in the Alabama State Capitol Building (double spiral staircase there). Andrew Jackson was inspired by this staircase when designing his for the Hermitage. The house is now used for special events and tours and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Dreamfield Farms

We took a day trip out to Dreamfield Farms pumpkin patch. They had lots of great activities for us all! First, the boys played on the bouncy houses. Daniel really enjoyed duck races with water pumps and Colin's favorite was the corn bins. The boys also loved the little push tractors they could ride on - they had to try out each color! We took a hay ride out to the pumpkin patch to pick out our pumpkins. Each boy got a big one and a small one. Then we rode the barrel train, went through the corn maze, ate some lunch, watch pig races, and played on the playground. We had a great time and can't wait to go back next year!

Pumpkin Patch Field Trip

Daniel's Pre-K class took a trip to a local pumpkin patch. Colin and I went along too. First they looked for treats buried in a big hay stack. Daniel loved this so much! Then they played some games tossing hula hoops. We had a snack and listened to a Halloween story. Finally we went on a hay ride and picked out pumpkins. We all had a great time!
